TESDA NIR Region Office (Negros Island Region)

Since the Negros Island Region (NIR) is still relatively new, it has yet to have an officially designated TESDA regional office. As of this writing, however, TESDA has three provincial offices in the region: Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, and Siquijor, respectively.

Through these offices, the agency provides various programs and services, including scholarships, technical and vocational training programs, and language courses.

Cities/Provinces Under TESDA NIR Region

TESDA NIR Region covers the three provinces of the Negros Island Region: Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor. It also includes the region’s major cities, such as Bacolod and Dumaguete.

Programs and Services

Among the programs offered by TESDA NIR Region are Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs, which are implemented through four modalities: school-based, center-based, enterprise-based, and community-based.

School Based Programs

TESDA’s TVET programs include courses of varying duration; some of these are post-secondary courses that do not exceed three years. Some programs are carried out in the agency’s partner schools or institutions. In the NIR Region, TESDA’s school-based programs are available at the Lazi Technical Institute (LTI) in Lazi, Siquijor.

Center Based Programs

Many of TESDA’s programs are conducted in the agency’s regional and provincial training centers. Here’s a list of the regional and provincial training centers in the NIR Region;

Regional Training Center

  • Regional Training Center – Talisay, Negros Occidental

Provincial Training Centers

  • Provincial Training Center – Cadiz, Negros Occidental
  • Provincial Training Center – Dumaguete, Negros Oriental
  • Provincial Training Center – Kabankalan, Negros Occidental
  • Provincial Training Center – Lazi, Siquijor

Community Based Programs

These programs cater to the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable sectors. These include learners who usually cannot afford or access formal training programs.

In addition to providing training, these programs also help establish livelihood enterprises, to be managed by the learners themselves. They also engage the participation of local government units (LGUs), non-government organizations (NGOs), and other partners committed to helping vulnerable sectors.

Enterprise Based Programs

These programs are typically held within companies or firms. They include three main types: Dual Training System, Apprenticeship Program, and Learnership Program.

The Dual Training System delivers technology-based training and education. These are carried out in two venues: the school/training center, and the company/firm.

Meanwhile, the Apprenticeship Program basically involves a contract between an employer and his/her apprentice. It usually takes place for a period of four to six months.

As for the Learnership Program, this is an on-the-job training (OJT) type of program, often held for periods not exceeding three months.

Language Skills Institutes

TESDA offers language and workplace communication courses to those who are planning to work abroad. These courses are available through the agency’s Language Skills Institutes (LSIs) and partner institutions, where languages such as English, Japanese, Mandarin, Spanish, and Korean are currently taught.

In the NIR Region, here are some of TESDA’s partner institutions offering language courses:

  • Negros Occidental Language and Information Technology Center in Bacolod City;
  • Yangoren Language Center, Inc. in Bacolod City;
  • Aspire Learning English Institute, Inc. in Dumaguete City; and
